and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm. Open A.I C.E.O Sam Altman envisions the company's upcoming AI hardware device as a transformative product that will change how people interact with technology. Developed in collaboration with former Apple chief designer Jony Ive, the device is rumored to be screenless and pocket-sized, though specifics remain under wraps. Open A.I acquired Ive’s design startup earlier this year to help bring AI to a broader audience through innovative gadgets. Altman compared the new device to the iPhone, calling Apple’s smartphone the"crowning achievement of consumer products." He criticized current devices for their overwhelming notifications and distractions, likening them to flashing lights and noise in Times Square. In contrast, Altman describes their AI device as offering a peaceful, calming experience, similar to sitting in a beautiful cabin by a lake. The device will leverage contextual awareness, filtering information wisely and knowing the best times to engage the user. Altman emphasized the importance of long-term trust between user and AI, with the device intuitively understanding the user's life. Ive added that the product aims to feel intelligent yet simple, encouraging effortless and intuitive use. Together, they hope to create technology that serves as a seamless tool rather than a source of stress.

Chat G.P.T has introduced a new shopping research feature aimed at simplifying product discovery. Instead of browsing multiple websites, users can describe their needs, like finding the quietest cordless vacuum or choosing gifts. The tool asks clarifying questions and conducts in-depth internet research to create a personalized buyer's guide. It leverages past interactions and Chat G.P.T memory to tailor recommendations uniquely to each user. To start, users can either ask a shopping question or use the shopping research option from the interface. The feature allows tuning of results, adjusting recommendations based on user preferences. It is now available on iPhone, iPad, and the web for all account types except Mac app users. Open A.I assures nearly unlimited usage of this feature throughout the holiday season. The technology runs on a specialized G.P.T-5 mini model trained specifically for shopping queries. This development adds a powerful tool to Chat G.P.T’s growing set of shopping-related capabilities. Pope Leo XIV addressed thousands of American teenagers at the National Catholic Youth Conference, emphasizing caution in the use of artificial intelligence. While acknowledging A.I's growing role in modern life, he warned that it cannot replace human intelligence or offer real wisdom. He advised young people not to rely on AI for tasks like homework or personal decision-making, highlighting its lack of moral judgment. The pope underscored that true safety with AI comes from education and personal responsibility, not just rules and filters. He encouraged youth to use AI in ways that support growth without compromising their dignity and humanity. Excessive dependence on AI, the pope cautioned, risks diminishing essential human abilities such as thinking, creativity, and authentic relationships. This message builds on his earlier remarks at a Rome conference, where he praised A.I's potential in health and science but questioned its impact on human truth and beauty. He stressed the importance of recognizing what makes humans unique in ethical frameworks governing AI. Pope Leo also expressed concern about the effects of rapid information access on young people’s intellectual and neurological development. He concluded that vast data access should never be mistaken for true intelligence.

The Macquarie Dictionary has named"AI slop" as the Word of the Year for 2025, reflecting society's growing awareness of low-quality AI-generated content. The term describes meaningless or useless AI outputs that flood the internet and require users to become"prompt engineers" to sift through it. AI slop topped a shortlist including phrases like"Ozempic face" and"Roman Empire," with honorable mentions for terms such as"medical misogyny" and"attention economy." The selection committee included language experts from Macquarie, ABC’s Tiger Webb, and cryptic crossword creator David Astle. Astle compared AI slop to spam and highlighted its various creative derivatives like"slopaganda." The rise of AI slop has been notable, with former U.S President Donald Trump frequently sharing such content online, earning him the label"emperor" of AI slop. Australian authorities have warned about the dangers of AI misuse, including deepfakes and manipulated media. Chat G.P.T acknowledged the designation as a reminder to maintain high standards of accuracy and substance. The committee views the term as capturing a pivotal cultural shift toward discerning AI output quality. Overall, AI slop's recognition signals the need for transparency and critical engagement with AI-generated information. President Trump signed an executive order launching the"Genesis Mission," a major national AI-for-science initiative described as the largest federal research effort since the Manhattan Project. The order mandates federal agencies to connect datasets, supercomputers, and AI systems to speed scientific discovery and boost U.S. technological competitiveness. It establishes the American Science and Security Platform to link supercomputers, secure cloud AI, data, and automated labs for AI-driven experimentation. The mission aims to reduce research timelines from years to days or hours by combining data with neural networks for predictions and simulations. The program will protect copyright, security, and limit classified data access to approved users. The Department of Energy must apply cybersecurity and export controls, vetting external researchers. Officials emphasized rigorous testing to prevent AI errors, validating predictions against experimental results. The initiative focuses on AI integrated with physics, chemistry, and engineering models, not consumer chatbots. Private companies like Nvidia and AMD have pledged support to expand AI computing capacity at national labs. The mission sets deadlines for resources and capabilities, with full operation aimed within nine months, hoping to accelerate U.S. innovation and address national challenges.
