Carly W:and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm. On Monday morning, Amazon Web Services experienced a significant outage that disrupted a vast array of services, including Amazon's retail platform, Ring cameras, Chat G.P.T, Fortnite, Snapchat, and various banking applications. The outage began at 3:11 AM EST and was reportedly resolved by 6:53 PM, resulting in over half a day of downtime and billions in lost productivity. The root cause was identified as a DNS resolution issue, which impairs the translation of domain names into IP addresses, effectively cutting off access to online resources. This incident follows recent layoffs at A.W.S, where hundreds of technical positions were cut amid a corporate push towards generative AI adoption. A.W.S C.E.O Andy Jassy previously acknowledged that AI would change workload dynamics, potentially reducing certain job roles. Experts have raised concerns that replacing experienced personnel with AI tools may have weakened A.W.S's ability to respond swiftly and effectively to outages. Cloud computing specialist Corey Quinn criticized A.W.S for a loss of"tribal knowledge," suggesting that critical historical insights disappeared with departing veterans. Quinn argued that while AI can assist with technical tasks, it cannot substitute the intuition and experience that come from years of managing complex systems. This A.W.S failure underscores the risks of overreliance on AI without maintaining a robust team of skilled engineers. The outage serves as a stark reminder of the importance of human expertise in maintaining the backbone of the internet.
Adam N2:Microsoft is revisiting the idea of virtual assistants with the launch of Mico, a new character for Copilot’s voice mode. Nearly 30 years after Clippy, the infamous Office assistant, Microsoft aims to create a more engaging experience with Mico, which responds with real-time facial expressions during conversations. Mico will be enabled by default in Copilot’s voice mode, though users can opt to disable its visual presence. Initially available only in the U.S, Mico benefits from a new memory feature that helps it recall facts about users and their tasks. Microsoft is also introducing Learn Live mode, transforming Mico into a Socratic tutor that guides users through concepts using interactive whiteboards and visual aids. The goal is to give Copilot a lasting identity and make interacting with AI feel more natural and personal. Despite its enhanced capabilities compared to Clippy and Cortana, Microsoft still faces the challenge of convincing users to talk to their computers. To encourage adoption, Mico includes playful Easter eggs, such as a hidden feature triggered by quickly poking the character. Microsoft's push follows past efforts with Cortana, which was discontinued on Windows 11 due to limited user engagement. Mico represents Microsoft’s continued commitment to evolving AI assistants in a way that feels more connected and intuitive for users. Open A.I has launched Chat G.P.T Atlas, a new AI browser currently exclusive to macOS, designed to integrate its chatbot into web browsing. The browser features a minimalist interface with Chat G.P.T history, search capabilities, and an"Ask Chat G.P.T" button for site-specific queries. It offers a homescreen with search suggestions, but users report inconsistent personalization and a lack of news and weather updates compared to competitors. Search results often lack relevance, and the browser only shows up to 10 links per query, with no option to expand results. Chat G.P.T Atlas also falls short in providing detailed business information, such as reviews, unlike rivals like Perplexity’s Comet. A paid"agentic mode" can perform tasks like filling shopping carts or scheduling events but can be slow and occasionally inaccurate. The browser saves searches alongside chat history, potentially causing clutter for users. It includes features for image, video, and news searches, and can interact contextually with webpage text via right-click prompts. While capable of tasks like sending emails and creating calendar events, the browser struggles with more complex commands and has performance issues. Overall, Chat G.P.T Atlas is seen as underwhelming compared to existing AI browser options, with significant room for improvement to compete in the market.
Carly W:Microsoft has officially launched"Copilot Mode" in its Edge browser, turning its AI assistant into a central web portal. Each new tab opens a chat window where users can ask questions, search, or enter URLs directly. This mode integrates AI responses, search results, and navigation into a single interface, leveraging data from all open tabs. Copilot can summarize information across multiple tabs or compare products, enhancing multitasking. Previously experimental, Copilot Mode is now widely available, with new preview features like Copilot Actions that perform tasks such as unsubscribing from emails or booking reservations. However, these agentic features remain unreliable, sometimes failing to execute commands or providing incorrect feedback. For instance, when asked to book at the Hard Rock Cafe, it selected the wrong date despite confirming the intended one. Users can now grant permission for Copilot to access browsing history to improve responses through a feature called Journeys, which organizes history into topics and offers search suggestions. To activate Copilot Mode, users must download Edge and toggle the feature on, with additional options available in preview for U.S users. Microsoft aims to create a more integrated and AI-assisted browsing experience with these updates. Open A.I, the organization behind Chat G.P.T, has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, a team founded by former Apple employees. This team previously developed Workflow, an automation app that Apple purchased and transformed into Shortcuts. Their latest project, Sky, is an AI-powered assistant designed to perform tasks across any app on macOS. Although Sky never officially launched, a small group of alpha testers experienced its capabilities firsthand. Federico Viticci, founder of MacStories, described Sky as a tool that could fundamentally change macOS workflows and automation. Nick Turley, Open A.I's VP and Head of Chat G.P.T, highlighted that this acquisition aligns with their vision of integrating AI directly into everyday tools. The Software Applications Incorporated team, with their deep macOS expertise, will join Open A.I to enhance Chat G.P.T. Instead of releasing Sky as a standalone app, Open A.I plans to embed its features into Chat G.P.T. This move signals a future where Chat G.P.T not only responds to prompts but actively assists with tasks. The acquisition underscores Open A.I's commitment to blending AI seamlessly into users' digital lives.
