Carly W:and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm. Open A.I C.E.O Sam Altman has observed that social media posts are increasingly reflecting the quirks of large language models, as people adopt AI-like writing styles. Altman described his experience reviewing comments about Open A.I’s Codex tool as"the strangest," noting a surge of seemingly automated content. He suggested this trend arises partly because real users mimic AI speech patterns and because AI enthusiasts often cluster together online. Altman also pointed to the cyclical hype around AI tools and social media’s engagement-driven algorithms as drivers of this phenomenon. The result, he said, is that AI discussions on platforms like Twitter and Reddit feel increasingly inauthentic compared to previous years. Altman even entertained the"dead internet theory," noting a rise in accounts that appear run by AI. Y Combinator cofounder Paul Graham echoed these observations, highlighting that AI-generated content comes not only from fake accounts but also from aspiring influencers. This wave of low-effort AI-generated content, dubbed"AI slop," has raised concerns among industry leaders. Substack C.E.O Chris Best warned that"sophisticated AI goon bots" will flood online spaces with clickbait. Altman, Graham, and Best all foresee a media landscape increasingly saturated with AI-driven engagement tactics, challenging the authenticity of online discourse.
Adam N2:A recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau highlights a decline in AI adoption among large American companies, defined as those with over 250 employees. According to the biweekly Business Trends and Outlook survey, AI adoption dropped from 14 percent in June to 12 percent more recently. This decrease marks the largest decline since the survey’s inception in 2023, although smaller companies have shown a slight uptick in AI use. Earlier data showed AI adoption climbing rapidly, starting at just 3.7 percent in September 2023 and rising to 9.2 percent by the second quarter of 2024. The recent downturn follows an M.I.T study revealing that most corporate AI pilot programs failed to generate meaningful benefits. These findings suggest that AI may not be the unstoppable corporate revolution its advocates claim. Instead, AI could be seen as a trendy tool that businesses struggle to integrate effectively. The narrative of AI as a bubble at risk of bursting gains new credibility amid these developments. Overall, the mixed results raise questions about the long-term impact of AI on large companies. Observers will be watching closely to see whether AI adoption stabilizes or continues to wane. Google has enhanced its Veo 3 AI video generator to support 1080p resolution and vertical 9:16 aspect ratio videos. This update applies to both Veo 3 and its faster, more affordable counterpart, Veo 3 Fast. Developers can now enable vertical videos by adjusting the aspectRatio parameter in API requests. While 1080p resolution is available, it currently supports only the 16:9 aspect ratio. Google has also reduced the cost for video generation, with Veo 3 pricing dropping to 40 cents per second and Veo 3 Fast to 15 cents. These improvements are aimed at making Veo 3 tools more stable and scalable for production use through the Gemini API. Google demonstrated the vertical video feature with example clips, emphasizing the improved quality and affordability. The move aligns with Google’s previous announcement to integrate Veo 3 into YouTube Shorts later this summer. This update will likely lead to increased AI-generated content on popular vertical video platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. The proliferation of such content continues to raise concerns about the quality and volume of AI videos online.
Carly W:Google is launching new AI literacy programs aimed at empowering parents, educators, and students for an AI-first future. Drawing on over two decades of educational experience, Google emphasizes the need for training to use AI tools effectively in supporting learning outcomes. Their commitment includes research-backed AI learning features and a newly created AI Literacy hub providing accessible resources. Parents and guardians receive dedicated support to guide children and teens in responsible AI use. New programs aim to boost students' AI skills while teaching essential ethical considerations. Middle school students can engage with AI hands-on through the AI Quests game-based learning experience. Additionally, Google has introduced an AI Literacy Public Notebook on NotebookLM that compiles over 25 top AI resources. These initiatives reflect Google’s responsibility to support schools and families in navigating AI technology. The focus remains on building literacy that prepares young learners for future challenges. Overall, Google continues to invest in comprehensive AI education tools to ensure safe and effective AI integration in classrooms. Anthropic has launched an update to its AI chatbot, Claude, enabling users to create and edit Excel spreadsheets, documents, PowerPoint slides, and PDFs directly through the interface. Previously, Claude offered only basic file support, but this new feature allows for more dynamic interaction with a variety of documents. The update is available now as a preview for Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers, with Pro users set to gain access in the coming weeks. Free users will need to wait longer, as no timeline has been announced for their inclusion. Anthropic explained that Claude now operates within a private computer environment where it can write code and run programs to generate files and perform analyses. This advancement shifts Claude’s role from a passive advisor to an active collaborator, handling technical implementations based on user input. The company aims to bridge the gap between idea and execution by making complex, multi-step tasks accessible through conversational AI. To try this preview, users can enable“Upgraded file creation and analysis” in the experimental features menu. Once activated, they can upload or describe the file they want edited or created. Users can then download the completed work after reviewing it within the chatbot interface.
