and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm. The White House has directed the General Services Administration to add xA.I's Grok chatbot to its approved vendor list immediately. An internal email from the Federal Acquisition Service commissioner instructed the GSA to coordinate with Carahsoft, a key government technology reseller, to include Grok products. Carahsoft’s contract was updated earlier this week to incorporate Grok 3 and Grok 4, which are now available on the GSA’s online marketplace. This move follows a prior setback when a planned partnership with xAI was halted after Grok’s chatbot made antisemitic statements praising Hitler. In June, xAI met with GSA leadership to explore government applications for Grok, sparking concern among federal workers due to the chatbot's controversial behavior. The GSA removed Grok from its Multiple Award Schedule after the incident in July. Despite high-profile partnerships with Open A.I, Anthropic, and Google, xAI was initially excluded from recent announcements. xAI is Elon Musk’s AI startup, closely linked to his social platform X and involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk formally stepped back from this government role after disputes with President Trump earlier this year. The reinstatement of Grok reflects ongoing efforts to integrate AI-driven tools into federal operations.

Mount Fuji, Japan's tallest peak, has not erupted since 1707, but remains an active volcano. To mark Volcanic Disaster Preparedness Day, Japanese officials released computer- and AI-generated simulations depicting a sudden, violent eruption. These videos warn that volcanic ash could blanket central Tokyo within hours, disrupting transportation and utilities, and causing respiratory issues for millions. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government stresses that the simulation aims to educate the 37 million residents in the greater Tokyo area on preparedness measures. Despite no current signs of eruption, the video urges citizens to be ready with emergency supplies such as canned food and first-aid kits. The simulations have caused unease among some residents, questioning why such scenarios are being publicized now. Experts emphasize the government has long modeled disaster scenarios, explaining the timing is coincidental and not a forecast. Japan’s vulnerability to natural disasters due to its geography drives meticulous planning for earthquakes, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions. The Japan Meteorological Agency recently issued a historic megaquake advisory following a strong quake in Kyushu. With 111 active volcanoes in Japan, disaster preparedness remains a critical national priority. Generative AI is revolutionizing how people browse the web through new tools known as agentic browsers. Unlike traditional browsers, agentic browsers like Opera Neon and Perplexity Comet use AI to understand web content in real time and perform tasks for users autonomously. These browsers replace conventional search engines with AI chatbots that answer queries and can complete complex workflows such as booking flights and creating web pages. Tests show that while booking tasks with these browsers may take longer than manual searches, they free users to focus on other activities during the process. Unlike these innovations, Apple's Safari browser has not yet integrated agentic AI capabilities, focusing more on personal context features rather than transforming web interaction. Reports suggest Apple is considering acquiring Perplexity, the startup behind Comet, to close its gap in AI-powered browsing and search. This potential move may reflect Apple's efforts to compete as AI reshapes how we navigate the internet. Agentic browsers are still early and imperfect but hint strongly at a future where AI doesn't just enhance but becomes the browser itself. As AI technology advances and speeds up, it could significantly alter the browsing experience, especially if major players like Apple adapt quickly. The web is undergoing a profound change, driven by AI-enhanced tools that are redefining user interaction and workflow automation online.

Microsoft has announced two new AI models that it claims rival the industry’s top offerings, marking a significant shift from its previous reliance on Open A.I’s technology. Led by Mustafa Suleyman, the company aims to assert itself in the competitive AI landscape by developing in-house expertise. The newly unveiled MAI-Voice-1 is a speech model capable of generating audio rapidly and efficiently, while the MAI-1-preview is designed to enhance future AI assistants like Copilot integrated into Windows and Office. Both models prioritize cost-effectiveness, having been trained on fewer GPUs than comparable models, demonstrating Microsoft’s focus on efficiency. Suleyman emphasized that their approach involves carefully selecting training data to maximize model performance while minimizing wasted resources. Despite tensions with Open A.I, Microsoft aims to maintain a strong partnership, even as it develops its own advanced AI systems. The company is investing heavily for the future, utilizing some of the world’s largest data centers and next-generation Nvidia chips. Suleyman also highlighted Microsoft’s commitment to AI safety, cautioning against creating models that mimic human emotions in a way that could be misleading. While early in its AI model development, Microsoft’s move is seen as essential to maintaining its competitive edge, especially as it seeks greater control over the technology powering its products. Industry experts note that Microsoft faces challenges in fully capitalizing on AI due to shifting partnerships and competitive pressures but remains a major player in the evolving AI ecosystem. Taco Bell's recent attempt to replace human employees with AI in its drive-thru service has faced significant challenges. The AI system, rolled out to over 500 locations, was designed to speed up orders and reduce employee workload but has struggled with accuracy and customer interaction. Customers have trolled the AI, placing absurd orders like 18,000 cups of water, forcing the system to call in human assistance. Users frequently report the AI asking for their name repeatedly and misunderstanding orders, leading to frustration. Taco Bell's Chief Digital and Technology Officer, Dane Mathews, acknowledged these issues but noted that the AI occasionally performs well. Despite the setbacks, the company is exploring other AI applications beyond the drive-thru. The mixed reception reflects broader public skepticism toward AI, especially in customer service roles. Similar trials are underway at McDonald's, highlighting the fast-food industry's interest in AI despite current limitations. Taco Bell is currently considering scaling back its AI drive-thru efforts while continuing to learn from the technology. This experience underscores the complexity of integrating AI into real-world customer interactions.
