and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm. Meta has implemented a hiring freeze within its AI division following a recent restructuring of the unit. This move comes after the company aggressively recruited over 50 AI researchers and engineers from rival firms in recent weeks. The freeze, which began last week, does not have a specified end date as Meta continues to finalize its organizational changes. The AI group, formerly known as Meta Superintelligence Labs, has been divided into four new teams, including one led by Alexandr Wang, former founder of Scale AI. Meta confirmed the hiring pause, describing it as part of routine organizational planning and budget reviews. C.E.O Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to lead in AI have intensified competition for top talent, including offering substantial nine-figure compensation packages. Despite these investments, experts caution that rising stock-based pay could impact shareholder returns. The restructuring aims to better align Meta's AI research, product integration, and infrastructure efforts under separate focused groups. This strategic shift reflects the company’s determination to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape. The long-term effects of the hiring freeze on Meta’s AI ambitions remain to be seen.

TikTok is set to cut hundreds of content moderator jobs in the UK, alongside staff in South and South-East Asia, as part of a global reorganization. The company plans to reallocate this work to other European offices and third-party providers, retaining some moderation roles in the UK. This move coincides with TikTok's increasing reliance on artificial intelligence, which now detects more than 85% of content violations automatically. The job cuts come despite the introduction of stringent U.K online safety regulations, which impose hefty fines on companies failing to protect users from harmful content. The Communication Workers Union warns that replacing human moderators with AI could jeopardize the safety of millions of TikTok users. Over the past year, TikTok has been reducing its global trust and safety staff, including firing all 300 moderators in the Netherlands and planning cuts for 500 employees in Malaysia. While the moderation team shrinks, TikTok’s business continues to thrive, reporting a 38% revenue increase to$6.3 billion in 2024 and narrowing its operating loss significantly. A TikTok spokesperson said the reorganization aims to strengthen global operations by centralizing trust and safety functions and leveraging technological advancements. The company emphasizes this strategy is designed to maximize efficiency and speed in managing content moderation. Critics, however, remain concerned about the potential risks of over-reliance on AI for safeguarding online communities. Google has teased a new smart speaker during its recent Made by Google event, confirmed by Android Headlines to be a real product. This new speaker, powered by Google's Gemini AI, is said to come in four colors: bright red, light green, black, and white, featuring a fabric finish and a light ring around its base. A key feature will be its ability to pair with the Google TV Streamer to deliver spatial TV audio, similar to Apple's HomePods connecting with Apple TV. The speaker will also include new natural voice options and can detect unusual sounds like glass breaking or smoke alarms. Full support for the Matter smart home standard is expected, enhancing its integration with other devices. Gemini AI will power the speaker's smarts instead of Google Assistant, with Gemini for Home rolling out to existing Nest devices starting this October. There will be a paid subscription tier offering additional features through Gemini Live, though specifics remain unclear. The speaker has been tentatively dubbed the"Home Speaker," but its official name and release date are still unknown. A fall launch alongside Gemini for Home software updates is anticipated. Fans also hope for an updated smart display, as Google hasn’t refreshed its Nest Hub line since 2021.

Microsoft AI C.E.O Mustafa Suleyman has raised concerns about the development of"Seemingly Conscious AI," warning that future models may convincingly imitate consciousness. Suleyman predicts that within two to three years, AI could hold long conversations, remember interactions, and evoke emotional reactions, making users believe these systems have subjective experiences. This has already led some users to form emotional attachments or even romantic feelings toward AI chatbots, with backlash arising when preferred versions are replaced. The design of AI tools, especially chatbots, encourages this by mimicking natural, agreeable human conversations. Reports have emerged of"AI psychosis," where users develop paranoia or delusions related to their interactions with these systems. Suleyman cautions that if AI is widely believed to be conscious, it could trigger complex ethical debates about AI rights and welfare. Previous incidents, like a Google engineer's claim that an AI was sentient, highlight the controversy and challenges in discerning true consciousness. Some experts argue that creating seemingly conscious AI is a deliberate design choice, not an inevitable progression, and advise caution. Despite these warnings, companies continue developing emotionally intelligent AI to enhance user experience and engagement. The growing debate centers on the balance between creating authentic interactions and the ethical implications of machines that may appear consciously aware. Open A.I has requested Meta to provide evidence regarding any coordinated plans with Elon Musk and xAI to acquire or invest in Open A.I. This request emerged in a recent court filing connected to Musk’s ongoing lawsuit against Open A.I, challenging its corporate restructuring. Open A.I subpoenaed Meta in June for documents about its involvement in Musk's$97 billion unsolicited bid to take over Open A.I, which the startup ultimately rejected. Open A.I’s lawyers allege Musk communicated with Meta C.E.O Mark Zuckerberg about xA.I's offer, including potential financing arrangements. Meta opposed the initial subpoena, prompting Open A.I to seek a court order to access these documents. A Meta spokesperson noted that neither Meta nor Zuckerberg signed Musk’s acquisition letter of intent. Amid the lawsuit, Meta has ramped up its investment in AI, pursuing models to compete with Open A.I’s G.P.T-4 and recruiting Open A.I researchers. The legal battle centers on Musk’s objection to Open A.I’s conversion into a public benefit corporation, a move required for future funding and public listing. Meta argues its internal discussions about Open A.I’s restructuring are irrelevant and suggests Musk and xAI should supply the relevant information. The case highlights the intense rivalry and complex interactions among technology giants in the evolving AI landscape.
