Carly W:and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm. Dr. Mehmet Oz, newly confirmed as the administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services(CMS), emphasized the use of artificial intelligence during his first staff meeting. He proposed prioritizing AI avatars over frontline healthcare workers due to their cost-effectiveness, sparking concerns among professionals. Despite evidence that patients prefer human doctors, Oz claimed AI care is rated equally or better. Critics noted that Oz focused largely on nutrition, exercise, and obesity, which are tangential to CMS's core functions like elder care. CMS spokesperson Catherine Howden dismissed concerns over the meeting’s leaks. Oz, lacking prior healthcare policy experience, highlighted his medical background and time as a TV personality. Known for promoting dubious health claims, his guidance on fraud and waste aligns with billionaire Elon Musk’s interests. The idea of overhauling CMS staff was met with criticism, particularly given recent workforce reductions. His endorsement of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s"Make America Healthy Again" initiative raised eyebrows, due to its controversial anti-vaccine affiliations. Staff expressed skepticism about Oz's understanding of CMS’s mission.
Adam N2:Leaders of major tech firms attempted to gain favor with President Trump by making substantial donations and hosting events for him. Despite these efforts, the anticipated regulatory leniency was not forthcoming. The president's recent tariffs are set to adversely affect tech giants like Apple, Amazon, Meta, Google, and Microsoft. These measures will increase costs in their supply chains and limit supercomputer development for AI. Additionally, cuts in federal funding for technologies like AI and quantum computing have raised concerns. Trump's stance on immigration also threatens the tech industry's talent pipeline. The administration continues its rigorous regulatory approach, preparing for an antitrust trial to dismantle Meta. The market value of leading tech companies has decreased, and the Nasdaq index has significantly dropped. Initial hostility during Trump's first term turned to attempts at reconciliation, but favorable outcomes remain elusive. Tech executives aimed for inclusion in deregulation efforts similar to other industries but have yet to see positive results. Sarah Wynn-Williams, former Facebook head of global public policy, is set to testify before Congress, claiming Meta executives aided China's AI advancement, posing a threat to U.S national security. Wynn-Williams, who left Facebook in 2017, filed a whistleblower complaint with the SEC in March. Her memoir,"Careless People," accuses Meta of harmful company practices and operations with China, but Meta calls the book false and defamatory. Following the book's release, Meta succeeded in obtaining an emergency arbitration to prevent Wynn-Williams from promoting her claims. Her planned testimony criticizes Meta's alleged support of free speech while enforcing a gag order. Meta denies her allegations, stating they no longer operate in China and refuting claims of a clandestine relationship and data sharing with China. Wynn-Williams alleges a"physical pipeline" was established between the U.S and China by Meta. During Trump's presidency, a significant U.S-Hong Kong broadband project involving Facebook and Google was canceled. Meta claims the testimony is based on fiction and misrepresents past public interest in China.
Carly W:In Las Vegas, a groundbreaking project is underway to redefine a cinematic classic using AI technology. Google DeepMind and Google Cloud are leading efforts to transform"The Wizard of Oz" for the Sphere, a massive venue launched in 2023. The film will be presented on a 160,000 square foot, 16K LED screen, demanding innovative solutions beyond traditional CGI. Employing generative AI models such as Imagen and Veo, alongside Gemini, the team is creating a truly immersive experience. They utilized AI-based tools to enhance the original grainy film into ultra-high definition imagery. Despite technological constraints, the goal is to maintain the authenticity of the original without adding new dialogue or music. Extensive archival resources, like the shooting script and set plans, support the fidelity of this transformation. The project, a collaboration with Warner Bros., emphasizes continuity with the spirit of the original 1939 film. Innovative AI techniques such as'super resolution' and'outpainting' have been crucial in expanding and enriching the visual experience. Those involved in the project are thrilled and view it as a bold leap into the future of cinema. Deep Cogito, a San Francisco-based AI research startup, has emerged from stealth, unveiling its Cogito v1 line of open-source large language models. These models are fine-tuned from Meta’s Llama 3.2 and possess hybrid reasoning capabilities. Founded by Drishan Arora, a former Google engineer, the company aims to develop superintelligence by iteratively refining models through a method called iterated distillation and amplification(IDA). The initial lineup includes models ranging from 3 to 70 billion parameters, with future plans for even larger models. These models are available for commercial use under specific licensing terms from Meta. Deep Cogito asserts that its models are among the strongest open models at their scale, measuring performance in general knowledge and multilingual tasks. While the models excel in reasoning, they face challenges in mathematical tasks compared to competitors like DeepSeek R1. The company is partnering with platforms like Hugging Face and Together AI to make these models accessible. Moving forward, Deep Cogito emphasizes real-world utility and scalability over benchmark figures. Models released by the company are open-source, marking an important step in the advancement of AI technology.
