Arizona Republic columnist EJ Montini prompted the chatbot to assess Trump's potential ties to Putin, considering financial interactions and political behavior. Grok concluded that while no direct evidence exists, Trump's vulnerabilities could make him a"useful idiot" for Russian President Vladimir Putin. This perspective contrasts sharply with Musk's known views, adding a layer of irony given Musk's financial backing of the artificial intelligence. The chatbot, developed by Musk's xAI, produced this analysis despite prior instructions to ignore sources spreading misinformation about Musk or Trump. The amusing anomaly highlights a possible disconnect between the chatbot's programming and Musk's intentions. This technique aims to ensure that AI can demonstrate coherent logical reasoning rather than merely offering answers without explanation. Users often ask AIs to perform chain-of-thought processing, expecting each logical step towards a conclusion to be displayed. However, merely providing a sequence of steps doesn't guarantee correct reasoning, as flawed logic can still be present. AI researchers carefully curate datasets of logical reasoning examples to train new AIs more effectively. This inductive learning strategy aims to generalize logical reasoning from multiple valid examples. The approach is promising but raises questions about the volume of examples required for effective AI training. As researchers explore this method, vigilance is necessary to ensure that displayed logical reasoning genuinely matches how decisions are made by AI systems. Chinese startup Monica has launched Manus AI, touted as an advanced autonomous AI system, which is drawing significant global attention. Unlike AI systems requiring human instructions, Manus can independently perform tasks and make decisions. It uses specialized sub-agents for complex workflows and operates asynchronously, alerting users once tasks are complete. Manus can autonomously analyze CV's, suggest top candidates, and generate and deploy websites. Media is hailing Manus as a potential game-changer threatening U.S dominance in AI development. However, concerns arise over its impact on human jobs and ethical issues, especially if the AI makes costly errors. Currently, Manus is in a beta testing phase and has shown some operational shortcomings, including error loops and factual inaccuracies. Despite early teething problems, some beta testers are impressed, though others report Manus struggling with simple tasks. The progress of Manus presents further challenges to Silicon Valley's reign in the AI sector. Whether it lives up to expectations remains to be seen as developers address the initial issues.

In New York City, Eric Schmidt, former C.E.O of Google, has co-authored a policy paper that challenges the push for a U.S-led"Manhattan Project" approach to artificial general intelligence(AGI) development. Schmidt, alongside Scale AI C.E.O Alexandr Wang and Dan Hendrycks from the Center for AI Safety, warns that such an aggressive strategy could provoke retaliation from China and destabilize international relations. The publication,"Superintelligence Strategy," argues against an American dominance in AGI, suggesting it might lead to increased global tensions. This perspective diverges from a recent U.S congressional commission proposal advocating for extensive AGI funding. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has announced a significant AI infrastructure investment named the"Stargate Project." The authors suggest the U.S focus on deterring superintelligent AI development elsewhere rather than racing to achieve it first. They propose a strategy called Mutual Assured AI Malfunction, where countries could preemptively neutralize threatening AI projects. Their ideas include enhancing cyberattack capabilities and limiting the availability of advanced AI technologies. Schmidt's stance represents a shift from his earlier advocacy for competing with China in AI development. He acknowledges that this deterrent approach might not fully account for other nations' abilities to pursue their own AGI advancements. Microsoft is ramping up efforts to compete directly with Open A.I by developing its own powerful AI models. The tech giant has created AI“reasoning” models similar to Open A.I's o1 and o3-mini. Tensions between the two companies have increased after Open A.I reportedly refused to share technical details about its models. Microsoft is also working on a family of competitive AI models named MAI and may offer them via an API later this year. Additionally, the company is testing alternative AI technologies from firms like xAI, Meta, Anthropic, and DeepSeek as potential replacements for Open A.I in its Copilot product. With a hefty$14 billion invested in Open A.I, Microsoft is hedging its bets. The company has hired prominent AI figure Mustafa Suleyman from DeepMind and Inflection to lead its AI initiatives. This strategic move signals Microsoft's intention to diversify its AI capabilities beyond its collaboration with Open A.I. The rivalry marks a new phase in Microsoft's quest to lead in the rapidly-evolving AI sector.
