and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm. In a controversial move, U.S President Donald Trump shared a generative AI video promoting the transformation of Gaza into a Gulf state-like resort. The video features a golden statue of Trump, Elon Musk eating hummus, and shirtless leaders on a beach. The proposal involves expelling 2.1 million Palestinians to turn Gaza into a"Riviera" owned by the U.S. The Palestinian Authority has labeled this plan a"serious violation of international law." Trump's video and the associated proposal have been met with forceful opposition from both Palestinian and Arab leaders. Egyptian and Jordanian leaders have pushed back, with Trump stating he’s recommending, not enforcing the plan. Palestinian leaders criticized the video as a"clowning gimmick." A CNN poll shows unpopular support for the proposal, with only 13% of Americans viewing it positively. Arab leaders are meeting to respond to Trump’s plan, emphasizing a path to statehood. The UAE has called for reconstruction plans to ensure stability rather than conflict.

Apple is set to release a software update to address a peculiar voice transcription issue on iPhones. Videos on TikTok showcased instances where words containing"racist" translated to"Trump" via voice-to-text. Apple attributed this to a speech-recognition model bug, citing"phonetic overlap" involving the consonant"R" as the primary cause. While some, like the New York Times, replicated the issue, others, including CNET, could not. Speculation arose about intentional programming, though experts like Haibing Lu suggest a simple error due to probabilistic language models. Machine learning's limitations and bias remain challenging as highlighted by this event. Scott Stephenson emphasized that while current AI aims for accuracy, fostering trust is crucial. Apple’s announcement coincides with its$500 million investment plans in the U.S. The tech giant recently revealed these plans alongside a meeting between C.E.O Tim Cook and President Trump. The mishap underscores the intricacies of AI technology and the importance of continuous refinement and transparency. Elon Musk's approach to work involves a relentless 80 to 120-hour workweek to achieve his vision of changing the world. This intense work ethic is not unique to Musk but reflects a broader American business culture that equates constant work with success. Prominent figures like Jeff Bezos and Tim Cook also exemplify this mentality, showcasing early morning emails and extended work hours as badges of honor. This culture suggests that hard work grants the right to influence society and politics, embedding the idea that entrepreneurs with extraordinary drive are almost superhero-like. The roots of this mindset trace back to economist Joseph Schumpeter, who credited entrepreneurship with breaking economic norms through sheer will and vitality. This justification of success as inherent productivity and empowerment has permeated into Silicon Valley, influencing tech and venture capital firms alike. The ethic has been further fueled by economic pressures, where good jobs have become scarce and are viewed as status symbols. As such, the modern wealthy portray their labor as conspicuous work, a stark contrast to past eras of flaunting leisure. This narrative underscores a growing disparity, contrasting the tireless elite with the broader population grappling with job insecurity.

Amazon has announced a new version of its smart assistant, Alexa Plus, with expanded capabilities. It will offer features such as finding concert tickets and ordering rides, but for the first time, these capabilities will come with a subscription fee. Free early access begins in late March 2025 in the U.S. for eligible Echo Show devices, with notifications sent to customers. Subscriptions are priced at$19.99 per month, but it's free for Amazon Prime members. With Prime costing$14.99 per month, the decision to independently subscribe to Alexa Plus may be unlikely for most. The upgraded assistant can be used on almost every Alexa device but will prioritize newer Echo Show models. No new hardware was announced, but compatibility includes Fire TVs and tablets. Some older devices, like the first-generation Echo and Echo Dot, won’t support Alexa Plus. Amazon's Astro robot will remain only compatible with the original Alexa. Access to some features will require additional services like Amazon Music and Prime Video, suggesting a Prime membership is essential for full functionality. Ocado, the online grocery specialist, is set to cut 500 jobs in its technology and finance divisions. This decision comes as the company seeks to reduce costs and enhance productivity utilizing artificial intelligence. The technology group specializes in developing robotic picking and delivery systems for global online retailers. C.E.O Tim Steiner emphasized the necessity of job cuts, expressing the challenge of making such decisions. Ocado plans to leverage AI to improve engineering productivity and decrease future R&D expenditure. Though expanding its robot-led tech internationally, Ocado focuses on software, requiring fewer staff. In its Luton warehouse, over a third of items are robotically picked, with expectations to increase this to 70%. As shares fell by 17%, the company predicted a slower technology sales growth due to warehouse delays for partner Kroger. Ocado reported a slight reduction in pre-tax losses to£374.5m, although sales increased by 14% to£3.1bn. Additionally, Ocado has faced issues with M&S, not receiving a final£29.1m payment due to unmet performance targets, while industry-wide job cuts continue to unfold.
