and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm. The U.K government is considering a change in copyright laws that would allow developers of artificial intelligence models to use creator content from the internet without paying royalties. Critics, including music legends Paul McCartney and Elton John, argue that this change could severely impact artists' livelihoods. McCartney has warned that the law could result in a"loss of creativity" by stripping young artists of ownership over their own work. He questions why profits should not go to the creators, referencing the earnings of successful songs like"Yesterday." Elton John echoed these concerns, suggesting that the legislation would enable big tech companies to exploit artists' work freely. John stressed that without strong copyright protections, the U.K's status as a global arts leader could be threatened. He believes that robust copyright laws are crucial for artistic prosperity and the future success of the U.K's creative industries. Both artists express fears that this move could allow AI to create competing music, further diluting artists' earnings. Their collective stance represents a larger community of musicians calling for more thorough protections against A.I's encroachment on creative content. The debate highlights the ongoing tensions between technological advancement and the preservation of artists' rights.

According to a new report, iOS 18.4 is anticipated to launch by April, potentially marking a significant milestone for Apple's iPhone and Apple Intelligence. In his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg highlighted that iOS 18.4 is set to bring the most substantial update to Apple Intelligence yet, spotlighting the much-awaited Siri AI enhancements. The revamped Siri is expected to include on-screen awareness and personal context, transforming it into a truly AI-powered personal assistant. These updates were initially announced during Apple's WWDC keynote in June 2024. The enhanced Siri could operate similarly to Samsung's Galaxy AI features, enabling complex command chaining. Additionally, iOS 18.4 will introduce the upgraded App Intents software, allowing more precise voice control over the operating system. Previous updates improved Siri's capabilities, adding features like follow-up questioning and Chat G.P.T integration. The public eagerly anticipates this next update, reaffirmed by Gurman’s report of its imminent release. This excitement builds as users prepare for the potential of iOS 18.4 arriving just months before the WWDC 2025. Chinese startup DeepSeek's AI Assistant has surpassed Chat G.P.T to become the top-rated free application on Apple's App Store in the United States. Powered by the DeepSeek-V3 model, it rivals the most advanced AI models globally, according to Sensor Tower. This achievement challenges the long-held perception of U.S. dominance in AI technology. Despite U.S. export controls, DeepSeek allegedly used Nvidia H800 chips for training at a relatively low cost. This has sparked debate among U.S. tech leaders about the effectiveness of such controls. The Hangzhou-based company's rise marks a significant moment in AI competition between China and the U.S. While DeepSeek's claims on chip usage have faced scrutiny, its impact on Silicon Valley is undeniable. Founded in 2023, DeepSeek stands out in a wave of Chinese AI advancements. It is the first Chinese AI model to be acknowledged for its high performance by U.S. tech experts. This development signals a potential shift in the global AI landscape.

Perplexity AI has submitted a revised proposal to TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to merge its U.S. business with TikTok's, allowing the U.S. government to own up to 50% of the new entity. This adjustment comes as a response to feedback from the Trump administration. The government’s shares, however, would have no voting rights, nor a seat on the company's board. ByteDance could retain some connection with TikTok but must ensure complete control by a U.S. board. The proposal excludes TikTok's proprietary algorithm in the merger deal. The structure aligns with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's strategy to reduce Chinese ownership in TikTok. This move emerges amidst heightened interest from investors, and President Trump anticipates a deal in 30 days. Despite Trump's earlier enforcement of a TikTok ban, he reversed the decision, acknowledging its role in gaining young voters. The Biden administration upheld the ban due to security concerns over user data control by a Chinese firm. Nonetheless, evidence of data misuse or algorithm manipulation by TikTok remains unsubstantiated publicly. The U.K government has reportedly halted multiple AI prototypes for the welfare system, amid concerns over scalability and reliability. These abandoned pilots aimed to improve staff training, jobcentre services, and expedite disability benefit payments. Officials admitted encountering numerous obstacles and expressed the importance of thoroughly tested systems. Although not all trials are expected to become permanent, the failure of these projects raises questions about the government's approach to AI. Critics emphasize the necessity of transparency and learning from these trials to ensure A.I's effective integration. The DWP has not revealed reasons for dropping the projects but stressed rigorous testing of A.I's value. Despite setbacks, the government maintains that AI holds potential to transform public services and enhance economic productivity. Plans for a modern digital government continue, with commitments to AI growth across departments. However, the challenge remains to align AI efforts with governmental rhetoric and expectations. Transparency and evaluation are urged to be central to the strategy moving forward.
