Carly W:and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm. A federal judge in Oakland has delayed a critical hearing in Elon Musk's lawsuit against Open A.I and Microsoft regarding its nonprofit status. Musk's legal team cited office destruction from the Palisades Fire as a reason for the postponement. Musk contends that Open A.I, which he co-founded, has strayed from its original mission by forming a for-profit entity and partnering with Microsoft. The lawsuit raises serious allegations, including racketeering and antitrust violations, against Open A.I's leadership. Open A.I and Microsoft have countered, dismissing Musk's claims as strategy to hinder a competitor. The Department of Justice has expressed interest, though it hasn't taken a position on the case's merits. Delaware's Attorney General has also intervened, indicating scrutiny over the proposed conversion of Open A.I into a for-profit entity. Meanwhile, Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group, has called for Open A.I's assets to be redirected to charitable causes if it becomes for-profit. The case has attracted attention from both state and federal levels, highlighting the complexities of nonprofit governance. The next hearing is scheduled for February, leaving much at stake for Musk, Open A.I, and the future of AI development.
Adam N2:A recent study by CalTech and UC Riverside warns that generative AI might outpace the environmental damage caused by cars in California by 2030. This concerning prediction emphasizes the massive energy consumption of AI data centers, which could account for 11.7% of the national energy consumption by the end of the decade. In 2023, this figure stood at less than four percent. The study estimates this energy reliance could lead to$20 billion in public health costs and 1,300 premature deaths annually. It also suggests that AI-induced air pollution could rival pollution levels from California's entire automotive fleet. As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, pollutants like nitrogen oxides and fine particles are anticipated to rise. Regulators are urged to enforce power consumption disclosures from AI companies to mitigate potential health impacts. However, the rapid growth of the AI industry may already make substantial regulation challenging. The environmental advancements made with electric vehicles might be negated by unchecked AI energy demands. Concerns mount as the AI sector expands to a hundred-billion-dollar industry with significant influence. In a significant move towards sustainable energy, a cluster of solar farms in Oklahoma is set to generate 724 MW to power Google’s data centers and AI operations. Leeward Renewable Energy revealed these farms are strategically located to enhance both Google's operations and Oklahoma’s energy grid. Construction has begun on the Mayes County Solar Portfolio, consisting of three major projects near Google’s Pryor data center. This venture is expected to power over 865,000 homes annually and significantly reduce CO2 emissions. The generated energy goes to the Grand River Dam Authority, which supplies Google's data centers. The solar projects will also create over 300 construction jobs and contribute$76 million in tax revenue to Mayes County. Google aims for carbon-free energy for its facilities by 2030, demonstrating a scalable approach to procurement. This development marks a step forward in Google's commitment to sustainable energy. The projects are anticipated to be operational by the end of the year. This initiative aligns with a broader trend of increased data center construction across North America.
Carly W:A French woman, identified only as Anne, was scammed out of 830,000 euros by criminals posing as Hollywood actor Brad Pitt through an elaborate AI-driven con. The scammers contacted Anne via Instagram, pretending to be Pitt's mother, and convinced her that the actor needed financial assistance for cancer treatment. Despite initial skepticism, Anne, unfamiliar with social media, succumbed to the well-crafted deception and transferred money to an account in Turkey. Following the realization that she was duped, Anne suffered severe depression and was hospitalized. The fraud attracted widespread ridicule, leading French TV channel TF1 to remove Anne's interview to protect her from harassment. The case highlights the rising threat of identity theft and fraud facilitated by AI technologies. Police investigations are underway, but the incident has prompted online mockery instead of sympathy. Even Netflix France joined in, promoting a post about watching genuine Brad Pitt films. This scam is a stark reminder of the dangers of AI in orchestrating sophisticated deception, as evidenced by a study indicating that one in four have encountered or know someone affected by AI-related scams. Anne's experience serves as a cautionary tale of vulnerability and the evolving nature of cyber fraud. Disneyland recently experienced a curious development with the disappearance of a new bride character hinted at in Madame Leota's Somewhere Beyond artwork. Originally teased to guests as part of the Haunted-Mansion-themed store, the bride's portrait has since been mysteriously removed. Speculation points towards this change being a result of AI-generated art, a practice that has faced criticism. Disney had previously stirred controversy with AI usage during the opening credits of Marvel's Secret Invasion. Such reliance on artificial intelligence has sparked debates about the impact on traditional artists and creatives. Fans and Disney Imagineers alike voice concerns over AI replacing human creativity. The House of Mouse is navigating serious backlash over the potential transition within its parks. Despite the uncertainty, Disneyland is proceeding with other new and exciting expansions. However, this AI debate has left the company balancing innovation with the original creativity that built its legacy. The tension surrounding AI art use at Disney continues to evolve as the parks anticipate further developments.
