Adam N:In 2024, DeepSeek V3 emerged as a leading competitor in the open-source language model space, significantly challenging giants like G.P.T-4 and Claude 3.5. Among its strong performers, DeepSeek V3 impressed with 45,499 downloads, although still dwarfed by leaders like Meta’s Llama 3.1, which saw 491,629 downloads. However, not all models launched this year found success, as several struggled to gain traction despite promising beginnings. Databricks’ DBRX model, despite boasting an impressive 132 billion parameters, recorded only 23 downloads last month. The Falcon 2 models by Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute also failed to maintain momentum, with only 1,000 downloads. Snowflake’s Arctic L.L.M, while competitive, couldn't outshine Meta's Llama 3 series on critical benchmarks. Stability A.I's Stable LM 2 and NVIDIA's Nemotron-4 series also faced adoption challenges, the former with just 444 downloads. Meanwhile, AI21 Labs’ Jamba, despite its innovative structured state space model, attracted limited attention with 7,000 downloads. AMD's OLMo models didn't succeed in captivating the community either, indicating ongoing challenges in the competitive AI landscape. Nvidia is set to make waves at CES on January 6 with a major announcement anticipated to be the unveiling of the GeForce RTX 5000 series graphics cards. Nvidia's recent boost in market value, significantly linked to AI collaborations, suggests strategic timing for this reveal. Expectations are fueled by hints, such as the Witcher IV trailer crediting an unannounced Nvidia GPU. A now-deleted post from HKEPC suggested the RTX 5000 series might hit markets around January 21. Initial releases are speculated to feature the RTX 5080, with other models like the 5070 and 5090 expected later. The new 5000-series cards propose a performance leap, rumored to be 50 percent faster than the RTX 4090. Additionally, they will reportedly include GDDR7 RAM for superior transfer speeds. Nvidia's promotional activities for CES further hint at the likelihood of this announcement. While details remain speculative, industry watchers are eager for official confirmation this month. All eyes are on Nvidia's keynote for updates on this significant technological advancement.
Carly W:A recent Treasury Department report reveals the use of artificial intelligence by a Moscow-based nonprofit to spread disinformation during the 2024 U.S. presidential election. This organization, closely linked to Russia's main intelligence division, created deepfake videos and disinformation about candidates. The Center for Geopolitical Expertise, supported financially by Russia's GRU, operated through a network of over 100 websites mimicking legitimate news outlets. These sites aimed to create false corroboration of stories and conceal their Russian origin. U.S.-based facilitators reportedly assisted in building and maintaining AI-support servers for this operation. Specific individuals or websites involved were not disclosed. The use of AI represents a newer trend in Russia's long-standing global election interference tactics. The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control has imposed sanctions on the Center and its director, Valery Korovin. The scope of these websites' current visibility remains unclear. This development underscores ongoing international concerns over AI-driven disinformation.
