Carly W:and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm. In an impressive display of the growing capabilities of artificial intelligence, Google DeepMind's AI systems, AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2, have taken on the challenge of the International Mathematical Olympiad. These AI systems scored a commendable 28 out of 42 on the exam, just one point shy of the gold rating, indicating that they are approaching the skill level of top human mathematicians. AlphaProof pairs a large language model with reinforcement learning techniques, while AlphaGeometry combines an L.L.M with a math-focused strategy, showcasing the innovative methods behind these AI solutions. DeepMind's AI had the advantage of unlimited time, with some problems being solved in seconds and others taking up to three full days, a stark contrast to human contestants who only have nine hours. Despite the extended time frame, the AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2's performance was binary; they either solved issues perfectly or could not produce an answer at all. Lead researcher Thomas Hubert aims to bridge formal and informal mathematics, utilizing the precision of formal methods and the vast data of informal approaches. This development is a significant step towards AI that can match human expertise in complex problem-solving fields such as advanced mathematics.
Adam N:Open AI has disrupted the search market with the unveiling of Search G.P.T, a search engine enhanced by the latest AI technology from the G.P.T 4 family. Unlike traditional search engines that display a list of links, Search G.P.T attempts to organize and summarize information, providing concise overviews with attribution links for further reading. It's prototype version is currently available to a select group of 10,000 users, featuring interactive elements that allow follow up questions and access to additional resources. The project could pose a competitive threat to Google as it leverages AI to potentially change how users interact with search results. Amidst the tightening competition, open AI has ensured collaboration with news organizations, mitigating the content appropriation controversies faced by other AI platforms. The company has addressed publisher concerns by allowing them to manage their appearance within the search features and to opt out from having their content used for AI training. Open AI's search G.P.T promises not only to connect users to publishers, but also acknowledges the looming challenge of balancing skyrocketing operating costs with the need to explore monetization strategies. Recent changes in Reddit's robots.txt file now prevent any search engine that does not use Google's indexing from crawling Reddit for new content. This update, effective from July 1, 2024, is a measure against commercial entities scraping Reddit for data, often to inform AI models. Alternatives like Microsoft Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Brave will be affected, potentially frustrating users accustomed to searching Reddit through these engines. Reddit's updated policy has coincided with a 60 million dollar deal allowing Google to utilize Reddit's content for AI training, casting doubt on claims that the policy change is not related to the company's partnership with Google. Official statements from Reddit suggest that the company is open to discussions with other search engines, yet agreements remain elusive. As Reddit remains exclusive to Google's ecosystem, this development could significantly amplify Google's advantage in the search engine market, possibly edging closer to an industry monopoly.
Carly W:Open A.I has implemented a new strategy to protect its AI from manipulative prompts that could reset the system to default settings. By introducing"instruction hierarchy," the system prioritizes developer commands over user inputs, ensuring more secure operations. This update is vital as Open A.I expands its models' deployment, preventing risks such as information leaks or other exploitative uses. G.P.T-4o Mini is the first to receive this safety feature, which will be integrated into all models if successful. Open A.I's recent security enhancements come amidst calls for improved safety practices within the company. The focus on sophisticated guardrails is a response to the challenge of preventing"jailbreak" attempts, where users might uncover and exploit vulnerabilities. Eric Hal Schwartz reports on these developments, underlining the necessity for adaptable protections in the evolving landscape of generative AI. As the demand for artificial intelligence surges, a Wall Street Journal report reveals that nuclear power plants are in dialogue with tech companies to provide energy for burgeoning data centers. Tech industry giants are making strides toward sustainability and efficiency, with the likes exacting a heavy environmental and economic toll, a recent panel at VB Transform 2024 highlighted the urgency of addressing A.I's rising power consumption. According to Kirk Bresniker of Hewlett Packard Labs, the cost to train AI models could soon exceed the U.S GDP, suggesting a critical need for immediate strategic changes. Practical solutions proposed involve A.W.S's engagement with alternative fuels and the release of efficient silicon options like Trainium for processing AI tasks. Meanwhile, IBM invests in quantum machine learning, which could offer significant savings and speed advantages, as explained by Dr. Jamie Garcia. With these advancements, the tech leaders underscore the necessity of radical transparency and informed decision-making to ensure sustainable, equitable integration of AI technologies. As experts from A.W.S and H.P.E discuss, the choice of hardware and the strategic approach to AI application are key factors in preventing the unchecked resource consumption associated with AI.
